Klostret Living Arts, Stockholm, Sweden

An artistic incubator for dance, music, poetry and visual arts.

The Stockholm region is booming, but still lacks studios for artists, especially emerging ones.

Klostret Living Arts aims to change this situation. We want to bring together some 60 artists, housed in a traditional late 19th/early 20th century building, and all interested in working together for a better society. Sweden is in urgent need of more art, especially explorative and challenging art, art that can open up and offer new possibilities. Klostret will focus on the production process and encourage dance, music, literature and the visual arts to cross-fertilize, drawing on each form’s unique strengths.

Each artist will rent a small room, a kind of monastic cell, and have access to open spaces for collaboration with others. Eventually rituals will be invented to guide artistic research, with a focus on live performances.

The initiators of the project - Emilie Reinhold, PhD in arts management, and Giorgi Kalandarishvili, classical guitar player - will select the artists who will stay at Klostret for a period of two years. Artists will be able to produce concerts, fashion shows, exhibitions and other performances in a heritage setting, with excellent dining facilities. The idea is that members of the public will be able to contribute ideas to shows in the early stages of their development process and thus partly contribute to the final result. At Klostret, art is produced and consumed simultaneously.

There will also be two spaces rented to creative businesses, with a possibility of bringing art into their meetings and participating in artistic events. Arts and business will work hand-in-hand from the start.

Our economic model is that of shared responsibility for heritage and artistic development in an old school or industrial space in the suburbs of Stockholm. Contacts will also be made with counterpart institutions in European and extra-European cities to share expertise and develop research into arts, business, and sustainable cities.

Klostret Living Arts: Our Offer

All members have access to the common areas of the house: café, foyer, and a romantic staircase in the centre. These are Klostret’s public areas, which will host a range of exhibitions.

In addition to this, the basement houses a recording studio, space for storage and four soundproof rehearsal rooms.

The membership also includes various services, including presence on website, consultation with arts manager or music teacher or help with administration.
